Helping Jonah Hinds - Benefit Dance this Friday

This Friday, May 14th from 6 - 9pm, come to Immanuel's gym and dance to the sweet sounds of Mr. Jerry Krueger followed by DJ Joel Menk. Enjoy A&W root beer, popcorn, and desserts. A freewill offering will be taken to benefit Jonah Hinds. Anyone who would be interested in donating a tasty homemade dessert (cake, torte, or cookies), please add your name to the sign-up sheet at the back of church.

Jonah Hinds is currently a 5th grade student at St. Peter Lutheran School, Fond du Lac. He suffers from a debilitating form of Tourette Syndrome. In December 2006 Jonah woke up with severe tremors. After months of doctor appointments at various hospitals, they finally concluded he had an undetected strep infection that caused an autoimmune disorder ultimately damaging the part of Jonah’s brain that controls his movements. The doctors were hopeful that monthly intravenous immunoglobulin treatments (giving him antibodies from blood donations to bolster his immune system) would reverse the condition. After a year of the treatments his condition was getting worse.

The neurologists now feel he has a severe but rare form of Tourette Syndrome. Most days he has loss of motor control and is continuously shaking and writhing, making the school days and sitting through church very difficult. So far there have not been any medications that have helped and most have unbearable and dangerous side effects. The doctors anticipate his condition will worsen through puberty prohibiting him from obtaining a driver's license, holding a job, participating in sports and making schoolwork almost impossible. Because of the severity, they feel he will not recover into adulthood as many Tourette patients do.

A last option is to try a procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Electrodes are implanted deep into his brain with leads to a pacemaker in his chest emitting electrical currents to his brain that will correct his motor control. While the surgery has risks, once he is healed there are no side effects with DBS. Unfortunately, the insurance company will not cover the cost of the surgery. While DBS is regularly used on Parkinson patients, it is considered experimental for Tourette Syndrome.

We here at Immanuel are doing a few things to assist with Jonah's medical bills and payment of the surgery. The school classrooms are currently participating in a "Coin War" with all proceeds being for Jonah's benefit. In addition, we are hosting the benefit dance referenced in the first paragraph. Cash donations can also be sent to: St. Peter Lutheran Church, 1600 S. Main St., Fond du lac, WI 54937 with checks made payable to “St. Peter Lutheran Jonah Hinds Fund”.
